Uneasy Marriage of Religious Law & Democratic State in Israel

December 18, 2013 12:00 PM-1:15 PM
No Cause for Action: The Uneasy Marriage of Religious Law and the Democratic State in Israel - with Susan Weiss Esq.
With two recognized systems of law operating side by side in Israel, religious courts possess the exclusive right to conduct and terminate marriages. Only Orthodox rabbis can marry couples in Israel and only rabbinic courts run by Orthodox, male rabbis can decide when they are divorced. If a husband does not willingly agree to deliver a Jewish bill of divorce to his wife, or if he is missing, incapacitated, or physically unable to do so, she remains bound to him forever, an agunah. Susan Weiss has actively worked to find solutions for the problems of Jewish women and divorce for over 20 years, first as a private attorney, then as founder and director of Yad L'Isha, and now as founder and executive director of The Center for Women’s Justice, a public interest law organization dedicated to defending and protecting the right of women in Israel to equality, dignity and justice.
