Undefeated Chabadniks Score Attention on Intramural Football Scene
The Chabadniks are capturing the football world's attention these days. Well, at least the world bordered by Chabad House and the rest of the campus at Drexel University.
That is where this team of players — no penalty flags needed for breaking Shabbat; it just wouldn't happen — is making a name for itself in the intramural flag-football co-ed league they are leading.
The Chabadniks are taking an undefeated season into the playoffs, which begin Nov. 25, capping off a year of Sunday night games. ("Friday Night Lights" has a completely different meaning for this football team, whose members also participate in activities with Drexel's Chabad House.)
In its first season, this all-rookie squad plays by the rules of good conduct and sportsmanshi, says player Jacqueline Rothman.
Does she see a Super ring in their future? Well, no, she says, maybe the grand prize for the champion will be a t-shirt.
Besides Rothman, players are Sammy Blivaiss, Jeff Resnick, Craig Rosenbaum, Noah Gross, Lyssia Katan, Stephanie Sussman, Aviva Gomberg, Michelle Silberman, Jesse Rossenstien and David Fleishaker.
As for cheerleaders? Frequent fans in the crowd include Rabbi Chaim Goldstein and his wife, Moussia, who run the Chabad House.
