The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank - Exhibition opening

September 22, 2013 4:30 PM-7:00 PM

Join us at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia for the opening of our next special exhibition, "The Enduring Designs of Josef Frank", focusing on work of the classic furniture and textile designer, Austrian-born Josef Frank (1885-1967).

The growing rise of Nazism in Vienna prompted Frank (who was Jewish) and his Swedish wife to move to Stockholm in 1933, where Frank started working for Swedish design powerhouse Svenskt Tenn (www.svenskttenn.com) and quickly became a leading pioneer of modern design.

Frank represented a freer, more artistic style ideal, and he developed his own type of modernism with values such as comfort, hominess and a wealth of colour in focus.

After the German occupation of Denmark and Norway in 1940, the Franks decided to temporarily move to New York City, where Frank created his most innovative and substantial set of textile designs. After the war, the Franks returned to Stockholm where he produced further new furniture designs.

Josef Frank continues to be celebrated as a leading pioneer of Swedish Modern design, and many of Frank’s textile designs and furnishings remain in production today.

----> Enjoy Josef Frank's timeless designs, accompanied by some light refreshments and an exclusive gallery talk by our Curator Carrie Hogan at this special exhibition opening.

----> WIN! Buy an advanced ticket to the opening, online or by phone, for a chance to win a Josef Frank designed pillow from Svenskt Tenn! (Value $160).

----> The first 150 guests to the opening will receive a gift certificate from siggi's for a bottle of free "filmjölk" (a Swedish-style yoghurt product).

The opening is free with museum admission ($4-$8). Free for museum members. Stay tuned for more exciting info about the opening. Register online (please register even if you are a member), call (215) 389-1776, or pay at the door.
