The Jewish Learning Venture announced it has selected The Wanting, a new novel by Michael Lavigne, to be the featured book in its annual One Book, One Jewish Community program.
The organization also announced that a local event with the author has been slated for Sunday, Jan. 26: No other details have been released yet.
The program, which began in 2007, is meant to enhance adult Jewish education through partnerships with synagogues and other organizations throughout the region by organizing discussions and events tied to a particular work of fiction or non-fiction.
The Wanting is set in Israel during the spring of 1996 during a spate of terrorist attacks that led up to the first national election since the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. It examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lens of a Palestinian family and a family of Russian Jewish immigrants .
According to a review published in The New York Times, the book employs magical realism to examine the thoughts of a perpetrator of a suicide attack. His ghost follows the lives of survivors of the bombing and he sees the impact his act has wrought.
