Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival

Ever wondered where “Hava Nagila” came from — and why it’s so ubiquitous at life cycle events? Interested in getting a violin’s-eye view of New York’s street music scene? How about going behind the scenes of Israel Defense Forces internal affairs investigations?

If you answered in the affirmative to any of the above, then the Philadelphia Jewish Film festival is for you.

Among the festival’s 12 films to be shown in multiple venues from Nov. 3 to Nov. 18 are Hava Nagila, a history of the song; Downtown Express, a feature film about New York musicians; and Room 514, a harrowing Israeli procedural drama.

And be sure to take advantage "Film Connects," a new element of this year’s series. An “FC” indicated next to a film title in the brochure means there’s something other than a post-film discussion. For example, Nellie McKay will perform at World Cafe Live after the showing of Downtown Express, and the Rock School of Dance will perform a piece before My Dad Is Baryshnikov.
