iCan Bike Bicycle Camp for Individuals with Disabilities

August 5, 2013 9:00 AM

iCan Shine (formerly Lose the Training Wheels) is a non-profit organization that teaches individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle through its iCan Bike program.  This five-day camp, requiring riders to attend only one 75-minute session per day, will be held August 5-9, 2013, at Holland Middle School, 400 East Holland Road in Holland, PA 18966. Eligible riders must register by July 15th to participate.  Registration for the five-day camp is $250.00; download registration forms at www.amica4autism.com.

iCan Shine collaborates with local organizations to host iCan Bike camps in their communities.  iCan Bike uses adapted bicycling equipment, trained professionals and volunteers in its proven program. With 75 minutes of instruction per day for five days, over 80% of riders learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of the camp program.

To be eligible to enroll, riders must be at least eight years old, have a disability, walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane, and be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Additionally, riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.

This local camp is being hosted by AMICA, a Bucks County-based program for youth and young adults with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD-NOS, and nonverbal learning disabilities. AMICA is now seeking volunteers to assist with this rewarding week-long program; download volunteer registration forms at www.amica4autism.com.

Families and volunteers can learn more about this valuable program at www.icanshine.org. For questions about the local August 5-9 camp in Holland, PA, please call Stephanie DeSouza, Owner/Director of AMICA, at 267-258-3974, or email [email protected]
