Elsie S. Gelfand, passed away on August 1, 2014 at her home in the Abramson Center for Jewish Ufe, North Wales, Pennsylvania. Elsie was born in Yedlnltz, Bessarabia (Moldova) in 1923, the daughter of Abraham and Bertha Snyder. Elsie was an intelligent, beautiful and elegant woman who loved her family and friends. The great love of her life was her late husband, Eugene Gelfand (Philadelphia Common Pleas Judge and former member of the state House of Representatives), whose adoration and unmatched loyalty bore Elsie through decades of debilitating illnesses. Elsie leaves her passionately devoted sister Beatrice Mattleman, also of the Abramson Center, her nieces Gwen H. Mattleman, Esq. of Washington, D.C., and Lauren Mattleman Hoopes (John) of Lawrence, Kansas, a grandniece, Alexandra E. Hoopes of New York, New York, a grandnephew, Nathaniel B.F. Hoopes, of Lawrence, Kansas, and a cousin, Elsie Lieberstetn Sachs, of Philadelphia. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Abramson Center, including the hospice team, for their wonderful care and commitment to Elsie's wellbeing during her final years. Memorial contributions may be made to the Temple University School of Law for the Eugene Gelfand '49 Memorial Fund, to the National Alliance on Mental Illness or to the charity of one's choice.
