The Jewish Exponent has won first place for Outstanding Website in the American Jewish Press Association’s annual Rockower competition.

The award, announced last week at the group’s annual meeting in Seattle, comes eight months after the paper launched a new digital operation, jewishexponent.com, complete with multimedia features, an interactive calendar and blogs.

“We are thrilled to be recognized with this award,” said Exponent executive editor Lisa Hostein. “Our new website and social media focus is where we need to be as our venerable newspaper looks to the future for ways to best serve the Greater Philadelphia Jewish community.”

This is the third recognition for the paper’s new online presence this awards season. And it comes on top of 11 earlier journalism prizes from state and local competitions.

Also recognized with a Rockower Award was the Exponent’s senior writer, Bryan Schwartzman. He won second place in the category of Personality Profile for a piece on S.A. Ibrahim, a local Muslim businessman who, as the headline announced, is “Building Peace Between Faiths.”

In addition, the publication was recognized by the Graphic Arts Association, a trade organization based in Trevose that serves the printing industry in Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware. The group recently awarded Evergreen Printing in Bellmawr, N.J., with several prizes, including “Best of Category for Weekly Newspaper” for its printing of the Exponent. The award also salutes the design excellence of the paper.
