The Buerger family’s $50 million gift to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, announced last week, reflects their longstanding concern for children’s welfare in and around the region.

Alan and Constance Buerger directed their philanthropy a few years ago (on a much smaller scale) to fund the Congregation Rodeph Shalom Buerger Early Learning Center. That facility, which opened in 2010, was created in partnership with the Federation Early Learning Services.

This current gift to CHOP — in which Alan and Constance are joined by son Reid and his wife, Krista Buerger, and son Grant Buerger — goes toward the construction of a new state-of-the-art outpatient facility.

Currently under construction on the hospital’s Main Campus in West Philadelphia, the building will be named the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care.

This is not only the largest gift in the hospital’s history, but also one of the largest naming gifts for a building in Philadelphia.

In a statement, Dr. Steven M. Altschuler, CHOP’s chief executive officer, said the new Buerger building “ both technologically sophisticated and family-friendly, will revolutionize care for children.”

The 700,000 square-foot Buerger complex, projected to open in 2015, will feature 12 floors of integrated clinical care facilities and patient, family and visitor amenities.

“As a patient family treated at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, we know the infinite value of having a world-class pediatric facility so close to home,” Reid Buerger said in a statement. “As a parent, and as a member of the hospital’s board of trustees, I believe there is no better way to help ensure every child receives top medical care than to invest in a facility that will house the very latest medical expertise and technology.”

Alan and Constance Buerger, longtime donors to Children’s Hospital, along with Reid, co-founded Coventry, a global financial services firm specializing in longevity and mortality risk. Krista Buerger is its executive vice president.
