Abrams Gets More Breathing Room

By any standards, the view from a school's administrative offices is far from exciting, especially during the dog days of summer. But this year's a little different for the principal of Abrams Hebrew Academy: Outside his office window, a brand-new school building is being erected brick by brick.

"It's fun to watch. Every day, there is something new," said Rabbi Ira Budow, principal of the day school in Yardley. "God has cooperated with us with the weather; it might not be good for the farmers, but the lack of rain is good for the builders."

Construction began in April on the three-floor, 17-classroom structure located directly adjacent to the current 25-year-old, eight-classroom building, according to Budow.

The principal predicted that the exterior of the new building will be completed by the time the roughly 300 students (kindergarten through eighth grade) return to school on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

But they'll have to wait until Thanksgiving to fully move in.

When the project is finished, the present school building will be used to house a library, science labs and art rooms.

One of the new building's pluses, added Budow, is a link to the gymnasium. For the first time in the history of the school, students will be spared the agony of stepping into the rain, cold or excessive heat in order to get some exercise.

One feature not added to the new site was a fully-functioning cafeteria. The kids will continue to eat in the old building.

Budow said the school and its supporters have raised $3 million for construction, and are looking to raise about $1 million more.

Officials are also working to establish an endowment fund.

"By the time we're done with this project, we will have a real campus," said Budow. "It will be a center of activity for all of the things kids need in a school."
