Keneseth Israel, founded in March 1847, was the fourth congregation to be established by the expanding Jewish community of Philadelphia. Orthodox in observance at first, KI adopted reform in 1855, and thus became the first progressive congregation

Dr. Reena Friedman, speaker:

This talk is a survey of the celebration of Jewish holidays in various periods of American history, 
citing primary sources. The talk, enhanced by an engaging power point presentation, is a journey through American Jewish history, using the calendar as our guide.
 
Dr. Reena Sigman Friedman is Associate Professor of Modern Jewish History at the 
Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, as well as an Instructor in the Gratz College Scholars Program (life-long learning). She is the author of “These Are Our Children: Jewish Orphanages in the United States,” 1880-1925, several encyclopedia entries, and numerous scholarly articles.
