Beth Sholom congregant & Huntingdon Valley resident Robert Van Naarden knew that he had a younger brother who died during the Holocaust. Growing up, his parents were reluctant to share the disturbing details of the brother’s life and death. He learned some of the specifics from other relatives. Last May he received an article printed in a major newspaper in The Netherlands. It described how his parents sent Wim (his brother) to live with a non-Jewish family in a small town thinking that he would be safe from the Nazis. Less than 6 months later 4 year-old Wim died at Auschwitz. Someone had revealed the secret hiding place. Did someone in the small town inform the security service? Were the traitors fellow Jews who were hiding others?
Van Naarden will share a summer visit to the Netherlands where he met with the people who tried to save Wim and the newspaper reporter who wrote the Dutch article. He will be accompanied by a special guest from the Netherlands. Van Naarden will present a PowerPoint presentation on “What Would You Do?”
