Federation is making a B.I.G. proactive push to encourage members of our Greater Philadelphia community, both Jewish and non-Jewish, to buy Israeli products.

B.I.G. is an acronym for Buy Israel Goods.

Linda Maizels, Federation’s senior associate for Israel and Middle East Affairs, hopes that the campaign, which kicks off now, will be a popular one. “We want people to get into the habit of buying Israeli goods not only at Chanukah time but throughout the year.”

Organizations and individuals are being encouraged to purchase Israeli food, jewelry, art and other items for their own use or to give as gifts to friends and family. A list of Israeli products and local stores that carry Israeli goods is available at:

Visitors to this frequently updated website can learn how Israeli foods can complement such holidays as Chanukah and Thanksgiving.

Participants can donate in one of two ways:

Make the suggested donation of $18, or Chai, online to Federation at: Mitzvah Food Project staff will then purchase Israeli food items for its five pantries serving those who are hungry and food insecure throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.

A donation of just $18 can bring a smile to the face of a senior adult in Northeast Philadelphia who opens a Chanukah gift box filled with Wissotsky tea or Elite coffee and fine Israeli chocolates or a bottle of Israeli olive oil to prepare healthier potato latkes.

Or purchase Israeli food or nonfood items for yourself or others and enter to win our B.I.G. Philly contest. Then take a picture of yourself with these products, share your photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #BIGPHILLY or email your images to [email protected].

Each Friday, Federation staff will select the best photo and will post it on our official Facebook page, The weekly winner will receive an exclusive Federation-commissioned cookbook with delicious Shabbat and Jewish holiday recipes from Israeli and Philadelphia kitchens. All weekly winners will be entered into a grand prize drawing to be announced at:

Federation will match 10 percent of every dollar of each donation or purchase to support Latet, a nonprofit organization which supplies food to Israeli men, women and children in need.

Federation is grateful to the following: American Jewish Committee; Zionist Organization of America; Hillel of Greater Philadelphia; Jewish Community Relations Council of Cherry Hill; Consulate General of Israel in Philadelphia; and The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for partnering with us to promote buying Israeli goods.

Think B.I.G. and buy Israeli merchandise during Chanukah, Thanksgiving or at anytime throughout the year.
