I spent a Saturday night a few weeks ago with my fiancé and friends at a new restaurant off the beaten path in South Williamsburg. Pronounced “sh’eeksa,” According to the restaurant's chef/owner, Jason Marcus, Xixa is an alternate spelling for the word Shiksa ("non-Jewish woman" in Yiddish). Marcus, who is Jewish and also owns Traif ("not kosher" in Yiddish) a few doors down on the same block, named this restaurant for his co-owner and non-Jewish girlfriend, Heather Heuser.

In 2009, Annie Baum Stein and her husband, Mauro Daigle, opened their first market on Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia. Three years later, in May 2012, they expanded into Center City with a cafe in the newly renovated, gorgeous Sister Cities Park on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. “It's been an awesome adventure!” Baum Stein exclaimed. 

As we sat in her cafe with a plate of cheese and beer during one of the café’s “Pairings on the Parkway” events that take place on Thursday afternoons, I asked a few questions about her connection to food and business.
