Stanford Shmukler, 76, Criminal Defense Attorney

Stanford Shmukler, 76, a criminal defense attorney for more than 50 years, died Aug. 8. He was a resident of Elkins Park.

Shmukler received his undergraduate education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and was awarded his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.

He was a frequent lecturer and author on criminal law topics, and previously served as secretary/executive director, and then as a member of the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee, of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for 16 years.

Shmukler was a member of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, American and Federal bar associations and each of their criminal law sections as well as a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

He also co-chaired the Criminal Law Committee of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Federal Bar Association for more than eight years.

Shmukler served as the first chair of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Screening Committee, Standards for Appointment of Counsel, and was chairman of the Philadelphia Criminal Justice Section's Committee on Performance Standards.

He argued twice in the Supreme Court of the United States, including one of the five Miranda cases (Johnson v. New Jersey).

In 1992, Shmukler received the Thurgood Marshall Award of the Criminal Justice Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and in 1977, was recognized for distinguished service by that section.

He was a retired colonel in the JAG Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve, and formerly command- ed the parent JAG unit servicing Pennsylvania.

Shmukler is survived by his wife, the former Anita Golove; daughter Jodie Girsh; and sons Joel M. Shmukler and Steve D. Shmukler. He was the son of the late Samuel and Tessye Shmukler, and brother of the late Evelyn Goodhart.
