Israeli Rabbi David Yosef, an expert in Sephardi laws and customs, spoke Feb. 10 at Beit Harambam, an Orthodox congregation in Northeast Philadelphia.
Yosef is the son of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the highly influential spiritual leader of the Shas political party, and a former Sephardi chief rabbi of Israel.
The majority of Beth Harambam's congregants are Israeli immigrants, many of whom hail from a Mizrachi, or Sephardi background. Two years ago, Israel's current Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar visited the congregation during a stop in Philadelphia.
According to one person in attendance, Yosef spoke about the importance of Torah study. He also hinted that his father might be planning a visit to the region in the near future.
