The 2011 JCC Maccabi Games wrapped up with an Aug. 18 teen dance party at the Franklin Institute. About 1,500 people took part in the festivities. At the end of the evening, Philadelphia officially passed the Maccabi torch to Houston and Rockland County, N.Y. -- the cities that will host next summer's games.
Philadelphia teams captured a number of medals: Girls basketball won gold, boys in-line hockey did also, while boys 16-and-under baseball took bronze. Boys 16-and-under basketball won bronze and 14-and-under gold. Separate local girls lacrosse squads won silver and bronze.
Philly athletes also won medals in dance, swimming and tennis. Throughout the week, weather wreaked havoc with the baseball schedule, substantially truncating play. Other outdoor sports, such as tennis, soccer and lacrosse, weren't as greatly affected. At times, those contests were either moved indoors or to an artificial playing surface, which can recover more quickly from a deluge.
