Instead of wild spring break beach vacations, more than 30 students from the area chose to learn about social action or volunteer with communities in need through Hillel-sponsored alternative break trips.
Temple University Hillel sent 15 students to Oklahoma City to assist families recovering from a large tornado that devastated the region last May.
Meanwhile, 19 students from the University of Pennsylvania traveled as part of Alliance and Understanding, an alternative spring break trip that was co-sponsored by the Greenfield Intercultural Center, African American Resource Center and Penn Hillel. They explored the civil rights movement and the intercultural partnership between black and Jewish communities.
Next week, the Drexel Hillel will send a group of students to join in community service work in Baltimore.
