The Jack M Barrack Boys Varsity Basketball team opened its 2013-2014 campaign with a loss to a tough team from Abington Friends School. Under the leadership of new coaches, Rob Kushner and Jose Sanchez, their first game got away from the Cougars very quickly and eventually ended in a 69-29 loss. Turnovers were a huge problem for the Cougars as well as a slow defense and inconsistent offense. Ari Yosef led Barrack scoring with 13 points. Cory Barnet added four, including an impressive buzzer beating shot as time expired on the game clock.
The Barrack Girls Varsity team has played three games so far and are enjoying an unbeaten start to the season. The Lady Cougars opened with a 43-13 win over Westmont. Maya Shapira was the high scorer of the game with 18 points, while Sophia Shoulson had 15 and Lindsay Chevlin chipped in with six. In their second game, they defeated Mercy 51-20. Top scorers for the Cougars were Sophia Shoulson with 18 points, Maya Shapira with 14 points and Lindsay Chevlin with 11 points.
Their third game was a much closer affair, with Barrack moving to 3-0 on the season with a three-point victory over New Foundations, 29-26. The game went into halftime with New Foundations leading 16-8. In the third quarter, Barrack started to close the gap. With two minutes left, the score was tied before the Lady Cougars took the lead for good with two essential layups by Talia Raikin. The top scorer was Lindsay Chevlin with 14 points. Talia Raikin and Dria Gutierrez had four each.
