HIAS joined a coalition of groups in Washington on Tuesday to lobby lawmakers on immigration reform. The Jewish Community Services Building in Center City, where the local HIAS office is housed, served as one of the local points of departure.

Some 650 Pennsylvanians were expected to participate, according to Beth Yenis of the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition, which organized the state’s participation in the national effort.

A bi-partisan group of senators, known as the “Gang of Eight,” is expected to unveil a comprehensive immigration reform bill soon. The rally, which was expected to draw thousands from around the country, was timed to bolster support among lawmakers and the public for new measures.
