When I discovered that my kids had no idea what Purim was, I placated my very loud Jewish guilt by giving them my own Hebrew school lesson during Tuesday's dinner.

After the giving tide of my son's 10th birthday receeded, I steeled myself for the usual resistance to writing thank-you cards. To my surprise, he sat down and wrote them without a single complaint.

An old show tune brought me back to my Nana's kitchen when I was a little girl, listening to her sing along as she prepared Shabbat dinner.
