MITTLEMAN

Debra "Debby" Mittelman, 56, who served as president of the Cheltenham High School Parent Teacher Organization and as a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House, died Dec. 27. The former Debra Waintrup, she was a resident of Cheltenham.

Mittelman was honored by the National Kidney Foundation when she was chosen as Ms. November 2004 in the NKF's calendar celebrating 50 years of organ donation. She was selected for this honor after fulfilling her dream in 2001 of donating her kidney as a "living donor" to her son, Michael Mittelman, in a mixed-blood transplant, one of the first such transplants performed in the United States.

Mittelman had waited nearly 15 years for the science to advance far enough for her to make this gift.

Later in death, she donated her eyes and cornea with the help of the Gift of Life transplant organization.

In addition to her son, Mittelman is survived by her husband of 33 years, Alan Mittelman; daughter Lisa Mittelman; father Rabbi Harold Waintrup; mother Elise Waintrup; sister Miriam Waintrup; and brother Daniel Waintrup.

Memorial contributions may be made to: the Gift of Life Foundation, 401 N. Third St., Philadelphia, PA 19123, or to the Ronald McDonald House, 3921 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
