Debby and Dean Malissa of Huntingdon Valley, and Osnat and Hanoch Reichert of Philadelphia announce the engagement of their children, Sam Malissa and Chen Reichert.

Sam is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American history, with a minor in Japanese studies. He was in the cast of the Mask & Wig Club, the nation's oldest all-male musical comedy troupe, for all four of his years at Penn. After graduation, he spent two years teaching English in Japan on the JET Program, with Chen joining him in the second year. He is currently the assistant director of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia.

Chen is a graduate of the Pratt Institute of Design, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art history. She's an independent artist and designer. After living in Japan, Chen created her latest project, Botodesigns, playful Japanese-inspired characters produced in various media, including paintings, dolls, clothing and accessories.

This engagement is due to the matchmaking of Sam's aunt Susan Barazani, a lifelong friend of Chen's mother, Osnat, the two having met in Israel in 1974. Susan introduced Chen and Sam when the Reicherts had just moved to America in the early 1990s. After meeting as children, Chen and Sam didn't cross paths for almost 10 years, until they met again at a summer barbecue at Susan's home.

Chen is the granddaughter of Jacob and Leah Reichert, and Zafrira Shoham and the late Suki Shoham. Sam is the grandson of Joseph and Diane Entine, Betti Granitz, and Louis and Irma Malissa.

Sharing in the couple's joy are siblings Amy Malissa, Shai and Valarie Reichert, Gil Reichert and Yael Schwartz.

The couple is planning a summer wedding on the beach in Israel.
