Maxwell B. Fried, 88, Longtime Restaurateur May 03, 2007
Maxwell B. Fried, 88, a former restaurateur and real estate manager, died April 2 at Rydal Park Nursing Home in Rydal.
Fried studied restaurant administration and management at Cornell University. He operated his initial restaurant at Broad Street and Olney Avenue for several years until he was drafted during World War II.
After the war, he opened Maxwell Fried's Restaurant at 6900 Old York Road, catering to weddings, bridal showers and Bar Mitzvahs for more than 20 years.
In later years, Fried's interest turned to real estate. He owned and managed several apartment complexes, and sold residential and commercial buildings until his retirement.
Fried was a past president of the local chapter of B'nai B'rith. While in that capacity, he organized a program to relieve Christian employees at Abington Hospital on Christmas Day. He was named "Man of the Year" for this and other charitable acts. A survivor of open-heart surgery, he continued to visit hospitalized cardiac patients to encourage them.
In addition, Fried was a Shriner and a member of Congregation Rodeph Shalom and Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, and Philmont Country Club for more than 67 years.
Fried is survived by daughter Leslie Fields; son Joseph Fried; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, the former Henrietta Brenner.
