Local Religious Groups Hold Service in Memory of School Shooting Victims
Beth Am Israel in Penn Valley is hosting an interfaith service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in memory of the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
A number of faith communities, including Har Zion Temple, Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El, Gladwyne Presbyterian Church and St. Luke's United Methodist Church are helping to organize the event. The service is expected to last about one hour. The synagogue is located at 1301 Hagys Ford Road.
Beth Am Israel Rabbi David Ackerman said several of the religious leaders are involved with Heeding God's Call, an organization that seeks to end gun violence, and that the service Wednesday will feature a "soft advocacy" for stricter gun control.
Heeding God's Call is hosting a press conference at noon Wednesday in front of the WHYY building at 150 North 6th St., Philadelphia. Rabbi David Straus of Main Line Reform Temple is expected to speak on behalf of the Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia.
