Dragon unleashed: Eli Simon at bat

West Philly's Eli Simon, 13, an eighth-grader at the Penn Alexander School, and his teammates on Philly 's Taney Dragons bowed out of the Little League World Series with a 6-5 loss to Chicago on Thusday night,  Aug. 21, finishing their historic quest with back-to-back losses after two straight wins.

Eli, a left fielder, is the son of Bryant Simon, a history professor at Temple University who authored Boardwalk of Dreams: Atlantic City and the Fate of Urban America, among other works; and Ann Marie Reardon, a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Eli has had a "mixed" religious upbringing, says his dad, but takes part in Jewish holidays and traditions.

Eli would probably love to become a professional baseball player, his dad continues, but his more realistic ambitions are along the lines of being a writer, lawyer or entrepreneur one day.
