Landmark Northeast Kosher Bakery Closes
Hesh's Eclair Bake Shoppe in the Northeast has closed after 54 years in business.
A sign posted over the weekend in the window of the kosher bakery at 7721 Castor Avenue tells the story:
"Hi. It is with a very sad and heavy heart to tell you that Hesh's Bakery is now closed and will not be reopening. We thank you for your patronage. We will miss you. Sincerely, Hesh's."
The same note is posted on the bakery's website. Calls on Friday, Jan. 10, in response to reports of the bakery closing were met by a constant busy signal.
The kosher bakery — one of a number in the area that have since shut their doors — was originally opened by the Braverman family in 1959. For the past 20 years or so, it was owned by Bill and Sharon Krodthoff.
There are about two dozen kosher bakeries in the Philadelphia region, including a few run by supermarket chains.
