Katka Reszke in Conversation with Prof. Michael Steinlauf

February 22, 2014 7:00 PM

Katka Reszke and Michael Steinlauf will discuss her new book, Return of the Jew: Identity Narratives of the Third Post-Holocaust Generation of Jews in Poland.

A new, “unexpected” generation of Jews made an appearance in Poland following the fall of the communist regime. Once home to the greatest Jewish community in the world and then site of the biggest tragedy in Jewish history, today Poland is experiencing what some have called a “renaissance of Jewish culture.” Simultaneously, more and more Poles are discovering their Jewish roots and beginning to seek forms of Jewish affiliation. Return of the Jew asks,  “can there be ‘authentic’ Jewish life in Poland after decades of oppression?”

Born in Poland, Katka Rezke is a writer, documentary filmmaker, photographer and researcher in Jewish history, culture, and identity. She holds a Ph.D. in Jewish Education from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, an M.A. in Cultural Studies from the University of Wroclaw, Poland, and a Diploma in Jewish Studies from the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. Reszke is the author of “Return Of The Jew: Identity Narratives of the Third Post-Holocaust Generation of Jews in Poland”. She has lectured on different aspects of the Polish-Jewish experience at numerous educational and cultural institutions in the U.S. and Europe.

Dr. Michael C. Steinlauf is the Director of the Gratz Holocaust and Genocide Studies Program. He holds an M.A. in Literature from Columbia University and a doctorate in Judaic Studies from Brandeis University. He is the author of Bondage to the Dead: Poland and the Memory of the Holocaust (1997), He was a contributing editor to the YIVO Encyclopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe, and the editor of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry, v. 16 (2003), the first collection of studies focusing on Jewish popular culture in Poland and its contemporary afterlife. He has lectured at the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival and the University of Warsaw, and served as chief historical advisor and curator of modern Jewish culture for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
