Jewish Artists in the Barnes Foundation: Hassel Adult Education Lecture
The Barnes, founded by Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922, boasts an incredible collection of French Impressionist and post-Impressionist painting. Among the painters represented are several of Jewish origin—noteworthy in particular are Amedeo Modigliani, Jules Pascin and Chaim Soutine. Although none of these great artists was an observant Jew, none rejected his Jewish heritage and it may be argued that that Jewish heritage had a relationship to their oeuvre. In addition to discussing these painters, Main Line Reform Temple’s Cantor Marshall Portnoy will speak about Dr. Barnes' life and vision, and his relationship to Jewish collectors who influenced his collection. Join us for a light breakfast at 9:00 am, the lecture begins at 9:30 am.
