Jewish American Short Stories

May 8, 2013 7:00 PM

Explore the American Jewish experience as it is reflected in the short story. Guided by faculty from the Jewish Theological Seminary, University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton University, participants will read and discuss a selection of stories by American Jewish writers that span the past century. Encounter English and Yiddish language writers of the immigrant generation, delve into the post‐war American Jewish literary renaissance of Bellow, Malamud, and Roth, and discover how writers like Allegra Goodman and Nathan Englander are portraying the unfolding postmodern reality of 21st century America.

Faculty:

ALAN MINTZ - Chana Kekts Professor of Hebrew Literature at The Jewish Theological Seminary.

KATHRYN HELLERSTEIN - Associate Professor of Germanic Languages at the University of Pennsylvania.

JAMES DIAMOND - taught in the Judaic Studies and the Freshman Seminar Programs at Princeton University, where he was also the Director of the Center for Jewish Life.
