JEVS’ Young Leaders Help Rhawnhurst Older Adults
A dozen Northeast Philadelphia senior adults received help with home maintenance this summer thanks to JEVS Human Services and Rhawnhurst NORC.
Fifteen high school students participating in the JEVS Lasko College Prep Program and their 15 mentors from the JEVS Franklin C. Ash Summer Internship program were matched up with senior adults in need of assistance by staff from Rhawnhurst NORC.
Projects ranged from yard work and vacuuming hard-to-reach places to cleaning out the contents of a garage and a basement filled to the brim with belongings from deceased family members.
The Rhawnhurst NORC, a project of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Catholic Healthcare Services, is a community-based program that supports Northeast Philadelphia senior adults in their efforts to age in place in their own homes.
The Rhawnhurst NORC provides many of these supportive services through coordinating the efforts of community-minded organizations.
Volunteers for similar projects are needed year-round — particularly for a community service day in November to winterize homes of seniors — for taking out air conditioners, raking leaves and other tasks these older adults are no longer able to do for themselves.
To volunteer, call Abby Gilbert, program manager, at 215-320-0351, or email: [email protected].
The Lasko College Prep Program is a co-ed, year-round program, which includes a meaningful paid summer work experience for Jewish students who are rising high school seniors. Students are selected for their academic achievement, leadership qualities and commitment to attending a four-year college post high school.
The Franklin C. Ash Summer Internship Program is for rising junior and senior Jewish college students. Students are placed at Jewish non-profit organizations and the participants from both programs share many events during their summer at JEVS.
