Irene Wolensky, 93, Military Captain and WAVE, Dies

Capt. Irene Wolensky, USNR (ret), 93, of Haverford, Pa., died June 22.

Wolensky was raised in South Philadelphia, although she spent most of her life in Washington, D.C. She was the first in her family to graduate from college (Temple University, 1939).

In 1942 she joined the newly established WAVES. During World War II, she served with the Bureau of Ships, and after the war, her service in the Naval Reserves focused on aviation.

She was among the first women in the Naval Reserves to achieve the rank of captain; she was also an officer in the Naval Reserve Association.

After retirement from the Naval Sea Systems Command, she was an active volunteer, serving in that capacity, among others, among groups, at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Wolensky is survived by nephew Nelson M. Wolf; great-niece Amy Robbins; great-nephew Michael J. Wolf; great-great-niece Adina Robbins; and great-great-nephew Caleb Robbins.

She was the sister of the late Miriam Wolf.
