From Homeless To Lawyer

February 28, 2014 12:00 PM

“From Homeless To Lawyer: One Woman’s Amazing Journey” will be the theme of a special seminar sponsored by the Heart-To-Heart Program and the Bucks County Opportunity Council.

According to Mallory Hanfling, program director of the Klein JCC’s Heart-To-Heart, “Nikki Johnson-Huston, Esquire, is an unlikely success story having been born into poverty, homeless at age 9 and failed out of college by age 18. However, she didn’t let it stop her. She took a job as a nanny during the day, went back to college at night and graduated from the same college where she had previously failed.”

A 2004 graduate of Temple University’s Beasley School of Law Johnson-Huston earned a J.D./M.B.A./LL.M. in taxation and is currently a tax attorney in Philadelphia. The program will explore her journey, as well as the life’s lessons she has learned along the way. Johnson-Houston has found that being resilient has played a huge role in her success as a lawyer and in life. “Resiliency is a skill that can be learned and is necessary especially in such challenging times,” she relates. “As we begin to emerge from the recession, women need to learn how to be resilient to achieve. My own journey demonstrates that you can reinvent yourself and your life.”

She is a member of several boards of directors and has started a mentoring program for inner-city students interested in pursuing a career in the legal profession. She additionally has received numerous awards and conducted numerous panels about issues related to education, and co-moderated an event with Bill Cosby about her experience growing up in poverty.

The Heart-To-Heart Program offers life coaching and solutions to young Jewish families perplexed and vexed by problems of modern living and provides solution strategies and resources to address those problems.

The public is invited free of charge.
