The Bulgarian Jews: A Journey Between Myth and Reality w/Dr. Zvi Keren

September 16, 2013 5:00 PM-6:30 PM

Join AJC for a lecture about the history, culture, and the individual stories of Bulgarian Jewry throughout the generations with Dr. Zvi Keren of Tel Aviv University.

Dr. Zvi Keren is an eminent expert on the history of the Jewish community in Bulgaria and author of many books and articles on the subject. He is known for integrating music, Bible and rare archival documents into his lectures. By means of documents that have remained untouched for years he will illuminate a history that began with the first Jewish settlers in this mountainous Balkan country, their life-cycles, tales from the everyday, their relationships with the other inhabitants of the country, and the Ottoman regime. During this presentation, Dr. Keren will shed light onto darker and lesser-known corners which contain fascinating tales about this ancient Jewish community.

*Presented by the Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria and the American Research Center in Sofia.
