Startups: Jewish Shorts

September 27, 2014 7:30 PM

Introduced by Gary Kramer, Film Critic

Life, love, and death are intertwined in this year's program of comic and dramatic shorts.

In AUSCHWITZ ON MY MIND, two teenagers find romance, perhaps inappropriately, on a class trip. HANNAH COHEN'S HOLY COMMUNION depicts a young Jewish Dublin girl who desperately wants to participate in the Eucharist. THE FUNERAL is a darkly comic British story about a wrongful death. In HEAVY DUTY, two women bond over the death of one's spouse. I'M A MITZVAH shows just how far a friend will go to honor Jewish tradition. I THINK THIS IS THE CLOSEST TO HOW THE FOOTAGE LOOKED is a poignant, touching memory piece by the filmmaker about his mother. The program closes with THE MAN WHO BURIED HIS OWN LEG, an animated short about speed dating.
