Rabbi’s Spring Forum, “In The Storm: WWI and the Jews, 1914-1919” Presented by Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D. with Joan Myerson Shrager, M.Ed.
April 9 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Sunday, April 9
World War I was the first truly global conflict in which the technology of modern war was used. Vast and bloody, many hoped it would be the “war to end all wars.” In the trenches, on the seas and in the air were hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers, sailors and airmen and in many cases they fought against one and another as Russians, Germans, Brits and Americans. During the war, the British Army created the Jewish Legion, a precursor to the Haganah and the Israeli Army and the British government issued the Balfour Declaration. American Jews were able to speed their naturalization. On a bitter note, a census was conducted by the German Army to investigate the possibility of shirking. The poll proved the opposite but that did not keep anti-Semites from making nefarious claims about the patriotism of German Jews.
