ART AND THE HOLOCAUST • March 1 • Art, in all its forms, is often born out of tumultuous times. Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, PhD, and his colleague Joan Myerson Shrager, MEd, lecture on art created during and directly influenced by the Holocaust. Traveling the timeline of this horrific event, Rabbi Sussman will reveal the beauty that comes from chaos.
ISRAELI CULTURE THROUGH COMMERCIALS • April 5 • Modern imagery permeates our everyday life through mass media all across the globe. Mark Raoul Molnar, Shaliach of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, will examine what can be learned about Israeli society just from commercials. Screening 30 to 40 Israeli television commercials, Molnar will tune in on what can be discovered, and what cannot, about our world through advertisements.
RABBI, I WANT A GOOD FUNERAL: JEWS AND CRIME IN AMERICA • May 10 • Organized crime in the United States is both a drain on the national economy and a continually fascinating subject of popular culture. Rarely highlighted but ever-present, organized crime in Jewish society is surrounded by conflicts of money, power, and faith. Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, PhD, and his colleague Joan Myerson Shrager, MEd, will investigate the complicated history of the Jewish people and their illegal acts throughout US history.
