Defiant Kindness

April 22, 2014 7:00 PM

On Tuesday, April 22, at 7:00 p.m., Old York Road Temple-Beth Am will host a performance of Defiant Kindness, a one-man show that explores fictional tools for mental survival during the Holocaust, as well as its aftermath.
As the show opens, Jake, a cantorial intern, is unexpectedly thrust into the lead role for the Kol Nidre service. Wrestling with diminished confidence, Jake visits the rabbi, Leo, who survived concentration camp imprisonment as a teenager. As Jake and Leo share their life stories, Jake is bolstered; and he and Leo discover a revelation from the past that profoundly links them.
Written by congregant Harriet Gomon and starring local actor Kevin Rodden, the one-act theatrical piece incorporates segments of humor that serve as counterpoint to the horrors of the Shoah.
This presentation of Defiant Kindness is sponsored by Beth Am’s Lincow Institute for Adult Jewish Studies in connection with Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 28).
An earlier version of this play was presented at the Adrienne Theater in June 2013.
There is no charge for this event and members of the community are invited to attend.
