2014 Penn Lectures in Judaic Studies

April 7, 2014 7:00 PM-8:30 PM

Thirteen scholars from Penn’s Katz Center offer snapshots from Jewish life during the early modern period, an era marked by a dynamic interplay between the perseverance of medieval traditions and the upheavals of the new—the scientific revolution, the printing press, and the rise of new forms of communal and state authority—developments that would transform the lives and cultures of non-Jews and Jews alike in unforeseen ways, bringing their world ever-closer to the modern.

The Penn Lectures are made possible through a generous endowment from the Klatt family and the Harry Stern Family Foundation.

Hebrew without Hebrews:

Converso Hebraist Alfonso de Zamora and the Spanish Inquisition

Jesús de Prado Plumed (École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris)

Alfonso de Zamora (ca. 1474–1545) was a teacher of Hebrew at the leading humanist university of Alcalá de Henares in Spain. Among his various writings, he compiled a clandestine text mean to be a guidebook to help other conversos face inquisitorial interrogations. The talk will discuss Zamora’s particular struggles and demonstrate, more generally, the complex lives of conversos in early modern Spain.

Jesús de Prado Plumed has published several articles on the life and writings of Alfonso de Zamora. This year at the Katz Center Dr. de Prado is studying a manuscript containing Zamora’s notes which document the last fifteen years of his life in great detail.
