Erica (Ricki) Sommers Gero, 65, whose career included advertising, education and writing, died Feb. 1.

A lifelong resident of Philadelphia's Main Line, Gero grew up in Bala Cynwyd and lived in Wynnewood for most of her married life. She graduated from George Washington University in 1968 with a major in sociology and a minor in journalism.

Gero began her career with the Pennsylvania State Unemployment Service. After many years as a homemaker and mother, Gero returned to the work force by securing a master's degree in education at Cabrini College in Rosemont in the early 1980s. She then taught English in Lower Merion public schools.

In 1993, Gero was a founding partner of SK Advertising, which specialized in the publishing of legal notices and media placement. She retired in 2005. As a side pursuit, she wrote a regular column for the Main Line Times newspaper for about two years, interviewing chefs at local restaurants.

Gero fought and recovered from two bouts of cancer and became a fundraiser and advocate on behalf of leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a rare and aggressive form of cancer. She not only fought the disease for a number of years, but raised awareness of LMS and spearheaded several fundraising projects on behalf of its research. She remained active in this cause until the time of her death.

Gero is survived by her husband of 43 years, Bob Gero; daughters Carrie Pogust and Jessica Gero; brother Carl Sommers; three grandchildren; and a nephew.

Memorial contributions can be made to: LMSarcoma Direct Research, Ricki Gero Research Fund, P.O. Box 52697, Tulsa, OK 74152.
