Golfers didn't only respond to an eagle, tennis players to an ace and card players to a full house at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia's Country Club Days, which were held at the Green Valley, Meadowlands, Philmont and Radnor Valley country clubs in May and June.

In addition to the more than $4.9 million pledged by club members to Federation's 2005 annual campaign, each club adopted a project that dealt with critical community need.

Radnor Valley and Meadowlands raised money to purchase ambucycles for Hatzolah, the emergency medical assistance organization in Israel that's often first on the scene when tragedy strikes. The ambucycles are equipped with everything from oxygen to resuscitators to IV kits, and dramatically decrease response time to trauma sites.

At Meadowlands, funds were raised for two ambucycles. Club member Barney Bernstein made a gift through the club for the purchase of one of them.

Radnor Valley's project was dedicated to the late Edwin Solomon, a longtime club member and an ardent supporter of Israel. The club raised funds to purchase two of the emergency vehicles, with the help of a significant contribution from his family.

Philmont and Green Valley members gave $22,425 in support of Federation's five Mitzvah Food Pantry sites, which provide food staples locally to Jewish families and individuals in need. Each month, the sites help feed more than 2,900 people, including 1,100 children.

The daylong events were a mix of breakfasts and brunches; golf, tennis and card games; cocktails and dinner - and immense camaraderie.

Featured guest speakers discussed subjects that included the Holocaust, the importance of supporting Federation's annual campaign, the current political climate in Israel and the threat of terrorism - here and abroad - along with current security measures.
