Gloria Goldhirsh, 80, a prominent area pianist whose legacy includes the many successful students she mentored in music, died May 9 at her home in Jenkintown as a result of Parkinson’s disease.

Goldhirsh was a longtime faculty member of Settlement Music School and Jenkintown Music School and a founding member of the Pacevi Trio, as well as a member of the Grove Trio and the Huntingdon Chamber Players.

Her performances included a concert for dual pianos at Lincoln Center in New York and concerts hosted by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Free Library of Philadelphia, WFLN, Old York Road Temple-Beth Am — where she was a longtime member — Beth Sholom Congregation and Congregation Adath Jeshurun, where she accompanied its cantor emeritus, Charles Davidson, in several concerts. She also performed for many local universities.

The revered instructor helped launch the musical careers of her own piano students who auditioned for and were accepted to the Juilliard School of Music in New York and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

She held regular workshops from her home in Jenkintown, where two Steinway grand pianos in the living room were staples of her life, her career and her love of music.

As a young girl, she performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She graduated from Temple University, where she earned a degree in English literature and sang in the Temple University Choir, traveling with them to Europe. She received a master’s degree in English literature from the University of Pennsylvania and taught English at Abington High School, where she won many honors for her efforts.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Isadore; three daughters, Martha Rotman Snider, Eve Goldhirsh and Dorrie LaMarr; a sister, Phyllis Lishnoff; and six grandchildren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Abington Health Home Care and Hospice, 2510 Maryland Rd., Suite 250, Willow Grove, PA 19090.
