The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is actively involved in raising money for the Ukrainian Relief Fund established by the Jewish Federations of North America to assist the estimated 70,000 Jews living in Ukraine.

The recent civil unrest in Ukraine has had a tremendous impact on the region’s mostly elderly Jewish residents, many of whom live on small pensions and are being served by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel. Both organizations, which serve as overseas partners for Jewish federations, have extensive operations assisting populations in the former Soviet Union.

Security for Ukrainian Jews became even more critical in the aftermath of the recent firebombing of the Giymat Rosa Synagogue in Zaporizhia. While there have not been reports of other violence targeting Jewish communities in Kiev and elsewhere in Ukraine, local Jewish leaders have expressed serious concerns about their communities’ security as the crisis continues.
