Breast Cancer Survivor Banks on Education
Mitzvah Hero: Sally Rotenberg of Northeast Philadelphia, a breast cancer survivor of six years, is bringing her ordeal — and those of so many millions of others — to public attention. She is doing so, with, appropriately for a retired Philly schoolteacher, the help of area schools.
What It’s All About: Just honored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure/Philadelphia as Volunteer of the Year, Rotenberg co-created the campaign of Pretty in Pig, which raises funds for the Komen organization with the aid of school employees, administrators and students. How? The School District of Philadelphia has granted her permission to place piggy banks in a number of schools, which are then stuffed with donations. The campaign has raised close to $1 million to date.
Good for Her: The mother of three — Jill, Jeffrey and Abby — is serving by example not just for her family but the community-at-large. According to her brother, Michael Saewitz of Narberth, who nominated her for the Mitzvah Hero honor, she's always had an appreciation for tzedakah and giving back to the community.
“She’s a giver," he says, adding that her fight with cancer proves that “she has never been one to give up."
