Blast from the Past - White Pines Productions' "Happening"

June 8, 2013 6:00 PM-June 9, 2013 12:00 AM

WHITE PINES PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES MODERN-DAY “HAPPENING,” JUNE 8

Avant Garde Historic Cred Combined with 21st Century Youthful Cheekiness at Broad Street Ministry -

White Pines Productions is hosting the first in its series of modern-day “Happenings,” which will occur on Saturday, June 8 from 6 p.m. to Midnight at the Broad Street Ministry (315 S. Broad St.).  Both scheduled and spontaneous performances will (ahem) “happen” throughout the evening.  Performers include jazz vocalist Demetria Joyce Bailey, experimental theatre ensemble Dzieci, multi-dimensional dance troupe Band of Artists, experimental theatre group Found Theater Company and an interactive lighting installation by Aaron Rogachevsky.  Additionally, guests will be invited to partake in writing an original manifesto titled, “How to Save the World, or Owls.”

The term "happening" was invented by mid-20th century artist and critic Allan Kaprow. Kaprow wanted to view the artist as a creator or coordinator of experiences, rather than view art as a set of created works.  This went against the powerful critical trend towards Formalism at the time, although it was anticipated by some major thinkers of the previous two generations (Duchamp, Brecht’s “Epic Theater,” Dewey’s Art and Experience).

Like previous Happenings, White Pines’ Happening will have prepared as well as chance events, both of which will consist of performances from a variety of genres such as jazz music, interactive light installations and a communal meal.  At this very unusual party, guests will meander through the Broad Street Ministry having a completely unique experience as well as being co-creators, as their presence affects the events in surprising ways.
