Boarders Common During Era

Aside from train schedules for the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (referred to here as Railway), Page 8 of the 10-page edition featured a column of classified ads called “Boarding, Wants, To Rent, Etc.”

Rather than paraphrase the often-colorful language, here are some direct snippets:

“Gentlemen can have first-class board or rooms at reasonable prices in a desirable, healthy part of the city.”

“A lady who understands the care of a household would like a position as housekeeper with nice Jewish family; good home preferable to wages.”

“Housekeeper wanted: A working housekeeper wanted in Jewish institution. Must be good pastry cook.”

“Two adults desire room and board with a refined family.”

“Wanted: A position as nurse and companion by a woman of middle age who understands massage treatment. No objection to country, seashore or mountains.”
