Area ZOA Announces Gala Honorees

The local ZOA will honor a local journalist, a Northeast Philly rabbi and a handful of other community activists during its September gala.

The Greater Philadelphia District/Zionist Organization of America has announced the honorees for its annual gala, to be held on Sept. 10 at the Hilton Philadelphia, 4200 City Ave.

Native son Erick Stakelbeck will be saluted with the Ben Hecht Award for Outstanding Journalism. Stakelbeck works in a variety of capacities for Christian Broadcast Network News, where he is considered an authority on both Mideast and national security concerns.

Also to be feted: Community stalwarts Fran and Gene Shusman will pick up the organization’s Pillars of the Community Award while Rabbi Jean Claude Klein and his wife, Miriam, will recieve the Guardians of Israel Award. The rabbi is religious leader of Congregations of Shaare Shamayim in Northeast Philadelphia.

Susan and David Warner have been named recipients of the Friends of Zion Award in recognition of their work heading Olive Tree Ministries, associated with Immanuel Church in Wilmington, Del. According to the organization's website, its vision of standing up for Israel and the Jewish people “grew from our conviction of the need for the Christian Church to more fully understand its Jewish roots, especially in a global climate of increasing anti-Semitism.”
