This week's standout from Camp Pinemere eagerly participates in every activity, from sports to ceramics, and plays backup guitar at folk song sessions.
This summer, the Exponent will help you live the summer camp life vicariously in our new “Camper of the Week” series. Each week, we profile a standout camper nominated by the directors of Jewish camps around the region.
We also want to feature a selection of letters — “hello mudda, hello fadda” anyone? — sent home from local Jewish campers attending any overnight camp around the country. If you receive a letter from your camper that you would like to share with us, please email it to us.
Here is this week's standout camper:
Hayden Ufberg, 12, Bala Cynwyd
Camp Pinemere, Stroudsburg, Pa.
Favorite camp activity: Mat-ball (a variation of kickball)
Favorite camp food: Friday night Shabbat dinner — roasted chicken, homemade matzo ball soup and challah.
Favorite camp moment so far: Turkey Roast…no, Maccabi! Wait, it was the first Saturday Sing!
Why did you choose to go to camp this summer and has it lived up to your expectations? I had high expectations because I always have a great time at Pinemere, but this summer is even better than I expected. I'm having so much fun! I'm in the Village (the unit for the oldest boys) for the first time, and it's great.
My dad went to Pinemere and most of his favorite memories have to do with being a camper in the Village. I finally understand why: It's really a special area in camp. It's the most outdoorsy living space in camp and it's just so much fun to live up here.
His counselors say: Hayden is one of many amazing Pinemere campers that just loves, breathes and lives for camp. He's always happy and smiling.
Hayden's eager to participate in all of the activities, from sports to ceramics to camp-outs. He's even one of a dozen kids who plays guitar during Pinemere's (very unique) traditional Saturday folk song sessions. Hayden bleeds Pinemere green!
