The director of the grassroots PhillyIsrael group is organizing a June 19 rally at the corner of 16th and the Parkway.
A rally of support for the three kidnapped Israeli teens will take place on Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of 16th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway underneath the Israeli flag.
“It’s not political, it’s just to show support,” said event organizer Sharona Durry, who founded and directs PhillyIsrael, a grassroots organization that facilitates Israeli cultural, educational and social programming.
Prayer services and rallies of support have been held around the world for the safe return of 16-year-olds Gilad Shaar and Naftali Fraenkel and 19-year-old Eyal Yifrach, all of whom were kidnapped last week while hitchhiking from the West Bank settlement of Kfar Etzion.
Frenkel is a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen.
Durry added that she hopes people will bring flags and signs to show unified support for Israel on behalf of the Jewish community in Philadelphia.
“We feel a need to do something,” Durry said. There have been rallies in New York "and even at the World Cup, what about Philadelphia?”
