More than $800,000 was raised for Birthright Israel at a Center City party featuring Charles R. Bronfman, co-founder of the program that sends Jewish young adults on free 10-day trips to the Jewish state.
Charles R. Bronfman, co-founder of Birthright Israel, was the special guest for a Chanukah celebration benefiting this unique program that gives the gift of a free 10-day trip to Israel to young Jewish adults.
Marjorie and Jeffrey Honickman hosted this festive event, which was sponsored jointly by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the Birthright Israel Foundation, in their Center City home. Susanna Lachs Adler and Dean Adler also co-chaired the event.
Inspired by Bronfman’s remarks about the transformative power of the Birthright experience, many of the guests elected to rise to the challenge of making a minimum gift of $3,000 — the cost of sponsoring one young adult on a Birthright Israel trip.
The event raised in excess of $800,000.
To date, more than 350,000 young people from 65 countries have strengthened their connections to the Jewish homeland through Birthright Israel, including more than 13,000 from Philadelphia.
For every 1,500 young adults from Philadelphia who participate on Birthright Israel trips each year, there are another 1,500 who are unable to go on this incredible journey because there is not enough funding.
It is a priority of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Federation’s Birthright Committee to raise enough funds to ensure that everyone who wants to participate is able to do so.
The host committee for this event included: Madlyn and Leonard Abramson; Susanna Lachs Adler and Dean Adler; Bryna and Fred Berman; Ilene and Steve Berman; Sharyn Berman; Jill and Lenny Feinberg; Nancy and Robb Fox; Rosalie and Harvey Goldberg; Marcy Gringlas and Joel Greenberg; Marjorie and Jeffrey Honickman; Phil Neff; Gail and Elliot Norry; and Rabbi Michael Uram.
